Overview
The device stores chemical oxygen in solid form and releases O2 on demand via a controlled exothermic reaction. Our remit covered industrial design, detailed mechanical design, thermal management, strength/stiffness/creep, and manufacturing preparation.
The housing uses a ribbed, fin-like geometry to shed heat and protect users. Internal baffles, seals, and a reaction core interface were developed to deliver constant flow while maintaining safe surface temperatures and structural margins throughout the duty cycle.
Key Outcomes
- Safe external touch temperatures under worst-case ambient per CFD.
- Pressure-tight architecture with compliant venting and tamper-resistant cap.
- Snap-fit & quarter-turn features for quick service; DFM/DFA parts consolidation.
- Drop/handling margins validated with FEA and material test data.
- Tool-ready plastic parts (draft, steel-safe splits, ejector/flow consideration).
Engineering Notes
Transient CFD evaluated heat flux from the core to the outer skin; radial fins and conduction bridges control gradients while airflow paths remove hotspots around the trigger mechanism. Creep/stress in the cartridge cage and threaded retainers was verified at elevated temperature using time-dependent properties. Vent routing ensures products of reaction are directed safely away from the operator.
